Infamous Pirate Blackbeard’s Anchor Raised After 293 Years Underwater

Underwater off the coast of North Carolina since 1718, the anchor was raised from he wreckage of the Queen Anne’s Revenge by archaeologists.

Weighing in at almsot 3,000 pounds, this is by far the largest piece to be recovered from Blackbeard’s infamous ship.

What’s most impressive, this 11 foot, 4 inch long anchor with 7 foot, 7 inch arms wasn’t the biggest anchor on board. That’s right, the ship had multiple anchors.

The team had hoped to recover an anchor that measured 13 feet long with 8 foot arms, but it was too well attached to the ship.

Blackbeard captured a French slave ship in 1717, choosing to rename it Queen Anne’s Revenge.

This anchor isn’t even one of the first artifacts to be raised from the ship. In fact, this ship – listed on the National Register of Historic Sites – has produced over 250,000 artifacts over the years.
