Elementary School Launches Controversial Big Buck Photo Bulletin Board

The Maine school encourages young hunters to compete and win prizes for who bags the biggest buck.

A Maine elementary school is giving young hunters the opportunity to compete through a big buck photo bulletin board.

This opportunity for students at the school is sure to anger some, but it’s teaching the students responsibility.

Students K-8 of Whitefield Elementary can post photos with a bear, moose, turkey, and deer they’ve shot.

Teachers at the school are even able to get in on the action and post photos with their game.

Although students are able to post pictures of their successful hunts, they aren’t able to have their gun in the picture with the animal.

A no-guns policy at the school means the kids need to get a picture without their weapon.

“We started our bulletin board a few years ago and kids were posing with guns and their games,” said Physical Education teacher Jamie Simpson. “We have a no-weapons policy at school.  So the kids were also taking their photos without their weapons with them as long as they can still have their photos posted.”

The bulletin board encourages students to talk about their hunting experiences with their friends.

“I like the bulletin board,” says Caleb Bishop.  “If we kill a big deer or a big bear, we’re able to talk around to our friends.”

Bulletin Board Grand Slam

The ultimate goal is for students to get a grand slam. A grand slam is when they bag a moose, bear, deer, and turkey in the same year.

Olivia Brann and Caleb Bishop are the only seventh graders to complete a grand slam. Brann completed hers over the weekend.

“A lot of people think because I’m very ballet and I like to dress up and stuff in dancing when I say I’m a hunter, people are like ‘Wow!'” she said.

Bragging rights aren’t the only thing on the line. The student with the heaviest buck at the end of the season wins a prize.

Nine-year-old Cassidy Brann, Olivia’s sister, won the big buck competition last year with her 10-point buck.

That’s what we’re talking about!

We wish our school had held a competition like this when we were kids!
