Anyone Up for a Swim? Dozens of Gators Gather at State Park

It’s unclear why gators love to gather near the ‘Deep Hole’ sinkhole in Myakka Lake, but they come in massive numbers. The sinkhole, which is 200-feet-wide and 130-140-feet-deep, has become a popular gathering place for alligators at Myakka River State Park.

“There’s food, there’s water. A lot of the things they need, they can find here,” park ranger Chris Zizak says.  “I’ve never, ever seen alligators in this kind of concentration or number anywhere else that I’ve ever been.”

The site can only be accessed with a special permit, which is limited to 30 a day.
