The 2nd Largest Fish Ever Caught on Rod and Reel; 1496-Pound Bluefin Tuna

With today’s media and social media reports of unbelievable catches go viral, and some are legitimate, and some are 100% fake (see this wahoo story). Regardless of the legitimacy of the photos and the fish, the IGFA is the gold standard of the fishing spot, and all records go through their agency. So, for a record to stand for 37 years, you know it’s an absolute fish of a lifetime. Enter Ken Fraser’s 1,496-pound bluefin tuna.

There have been only 4 larger species EVER caught. A 1,560 pound black marlin, and 3 different sharks – including a great white over 2,000 pounds.

Bluefin Tuna are an impressive fish. They’re incredibly popular and highly sought after, but this particular bluefin caught by Ken Fraser sticks out from the rest. While fishing in Aulds Cove, Nova Scotia, Fraser hooked and landed his tuna in 45 minutes using a mackerel as bait. The tuna also happened to weigh 1,496-pounds. Ken caught this monster in October of 1979, and even though it’s been 37 years since that fateful day, his record still stands.
