World’s Longest Lightning Storm Lasts 160 Days a Year, 10 Hours a Night and Never Ends – Literally

Growing up in Florida, I’ve seen my fair share of lightning storms, but that’s nothing compared to residents of Venezuela who experience the Catatumbo everlasting lightning storm.

This ridiculously massive storm lasts 160 days a year for 10 hours a night in the same place – seriously. While it has offered up some incredible picture opportunities, I imagine the residents plagued by Catatumbo lightning could use some sleep.

George Kourounis reports about the storm on location during an episode of Angry Planet.

Maybe not – people in the area became fearful that the storm vanished forever after it briefly stopped from January to April 2010. With lightning striking up to 280 times per hour, you’d think this would be a relief. It wasn’t.

Luckily for dwellers along the Catatumbo, the storm finally returned and set their minds at ease.
