VIDEO: Ski Patrollers Fight Avalanches With Old WWII Cannon

It may seem like old military weaponry wouldn’t have much use outside of being melted down or scrapped, but that’s not the case for these WWII era Howitzers.

Ski patrollers responsible for reducing avalanche risk on California’s Mammoth Mountain are putting the old artillery cannons to work. By firing the cannon, the team is able to create very small avalanches, which significantly reduces the chances of a destructive one to occur.

These weapons meant for destruction are playing a big part in keeping skiers and snowboarders safe.
