Fishocalypse Now: It’s Raining Fish in Thailand?

If there’s one thing that can turn an event grounded in reality into something of biblical plague proportions, it’s the internet. An accident that left the streets of Thailand (as the video suggests) littered with fish quickly turned into something far wackier:

“Some media outlets tried to give a scientific explanation for the fish rain, claiming that ‘Monsoon winds lifted the fish from the river and the Indian and Pacific ocean,’ while others used the photos to prove that the apocalypse was near,” according to Snopes.

The simplest explanation is often the right one. This story is no different. It wasn’t the end of the world and there certainly weren’t any powerful winds that created a much less dangerous version of a Sharknado, it was the result of a fish truck accident. An accident that dropped seven tons of catfish and occurred in China – not Thailand – at that.
