Dentist Bitten in the Face by Bull Shark While Spearfishing on Vacation

A dentist was attacked and bit in the face by a bull shark while spearfishing during his vacation to the Bahamas.

Dr. Steven Cutbirth, of Waco, Florida, says he had just speared a 10 pound hog fish with his son-in-law when a shark which had been after the fish – this shark didn’t like someone else claiming his food – attacked him.

Doctor Cutbirth suffered lacerations to his face and right leg, which required stitches.

“I looked to my right and there was the white bottom side of the shark’s mouth along with a wide open mouth and plenty of teeth. I released the spear and fish and instinctively struck out with the back of my right arm and hand, still holding the spear handle, striking the shark square in the right side of its head,” Cutbirth said on Facebook.

Cutbirth has been diving in the same spot for nearly 25 years and says he hasn’t run into any issues before.

Here he is recounting the even in a video he posted on Facebook:

Though the island had limited medical help, he was able to find a nurse who stitched him up. He was able to continue his vacation, so long as he kept away from the water.

The insane thing is, his son-in-law returned to the location of the attack and recovered the doctors mask. After examining the mask, it became clear he had been saved from being bitten around and on his eyes.
