White Rainbows Exist and They’re Absolutely Incredible!

Ever heard of a white rainbow? We hadn’t either, it sounds like something made up, but they’re actually real – and they’re stunning.

A white rainbow was recently captured over Rannoch Moor in the west of Scotland. Melvin Nicholson captured the image while out on the moor south of Glen Coe, on Sunday when it appeared. Nicholson described it as unbelievably beautiful.

Also known as a fog bow, a white rainbow is a rainbow made from fog droplets in the air. The rainbow appears white because fog can’t produce color as well as other types of moisture in the air, so it looks white in many instances.

“It’s an amazing thing to witness and can generally only be seen if the sun is behind you when you are looking at it.”

He snapped the photo with a single windswept tree, framed by the fog bow, which he says perfected the shot.

“It was just beyond magical and one of those days that you’ll remember for a long time to come,” he added.
