Filmmaker Rob Stewart Found Dead After Scuba Dive

U.S. Coast Guard confirmed on Friday that the body of Canadian filmmaker Robs Stewart, 37, had been recovered off the Florida Keys. The marine biologist had been missing since Tuesday, when he visited the wreck of the Queen of Nassau while filming a sequel to his critically acclaimed film, “Sharkwater.”

The Key Largo Volunteer Fire Department found the filmmaker at a depth of 220 feet with the help of a ROV.

The Coast Guard and friends of Stewarts begged anyone who was willing for help in the search, asking people who had boats with searchlights for their assistance.

“Sharkwater” was Stewart’s best known film, winning 31 international awards, and helped get shark finning banned across the globe.

Stewart grew up with a strong love for all things water. His love for that lead him on his path to conservation through his love of marine life, which he pursued by studying biology, zoology and marine biology.

In the wake of the tragic news of the filmmakers death, his family posted a message on the “Sharkwater” websites:

“Rob has been found, peacefully in the ocean. There are no words. We are so deeply grateful to everyone who helped search, and happy that Rob passed while doing what he loved. We are working on how best to honour his incredible work. The Stewart family kindly asks that they are given some private time to grieve. Thank you everyone.”

It’s sad to see someone go at a young age like Stewart. Especially someone who had such a love and passion for taking care of the oceans and marine life.
