We can’t say we speak from experience, but being trapped in a sinking vehicle has to be one of the most gut-wrenching experiences imaginable. With an estimated 400 people a year dying from cars sinking in the water, knowing the best way just might save the lives of you and everyone who’s with you.

It might seem easy enough to escape a situation which involves your car becoming submerged underwater, but panicking can change the whole situation. The first 30 seconds are the most crucial. In the video, Geoff Fahringer, an expert diver, shows just how you can come out of this life threatening situation alive.

“We’re telling people that you have to get out of the vehicle before the water gets up against the windows, and that’s really in the first 30 to 60 seconds,” he says. “That means, don’t reach for your cell phone when you hit the water. Don’t call 9-1-1 from inside a sinking vehicle,” he adds.
