Bass angler Dan Maloon filmed video of the turtle that is from the Pacific Ocean in the San Joaquin River. The Turtle Island Restoration Network confirmed that Maloon had spotted an eastern Pacific green sea turtle. Eastern Pacific green sea turtles are usually found around Mexico—so how did this one end up in a Northern California river?

Validation came from the experts at the Turtle Island Restoration Network in Marin County according to CBS Sacramento. “There is no doubt in my mind that this is the Eastern Pacific Green Sea Turtle,” said spokesman Todd Steiner.

“This animal clearly came from the Pacific Ocean, there’s no question about that,” he said. “Apparently went north into San Francisco Bay and now it seems to be heading directly east.”

Talk about a wrong turn.
