These sailors must not have been thinking when they made their decision to feed a wild polar bear salmon.

In the clip, Ragnar Thorseth can be seen feeding a polar bear salmon sandwiches from his ship while on a trip to Svalbard between 1987 and 1988. Though shot nearly 30 years ago, the footage first surfaced in 2011.

The clip shows Ragnar feeding a polar bear off the ship multiple times throughout the trip. Eventually, the bear decided it might as well just come aboard and find the salmon itself and cut out the middleman. Forunately, Ragnar and those on board manage to close themselves off inside the bridge so the polar bear can’t reach them. It eventually loses interest and leaves the ship.
