VIDEO: Brothers Opt To Fish With Birds Instead Of Nets And Poles To Keep Tradition Going

Brothers Huang Yuechang and Huang Mingde are doing their best to carry on a centuries-old tradition of using cormorant birds to catch fish. While most modern fishermen choose to use nets and poles, these brothers have devoted their lives to keeping this tradition going.

In order to catch fish, they tie a grass knot around the bird’s neck and put it in the water. These birds typically catch a fish within a minute of diving down. Whatever the birds come back up with and weren’t able to swallow, they take for their catch.

This method of fishing is pretty incredible, but it takes a lot of groundwork with cultivating a relationship with these birds, but the brothers have been doing this for the last six decades. However, with young fisherman choosing more modern approaches, Yuechang and Mingde could be some of the last fishermen who use this method.
