Valentine’s Octopus Mating Event Canceled Due to Cannibalism Concerns

Tim Carpenter of the Seattle Aquarium told Crosscut.com that the annual mating event was canceled due to his staff not being able to find a large enough female octopus for the 70-pound male, named Kong.

Every February for the past decade people were allowed to watch the octopus mating ritual. Octopuses spend most of their lives alone until they find a companion and have ‘relations’. Once they have their relations, they die. Kong is set to be released into the Puget Sound on Monday.

We wish you luck in your search Kong … or, do we?

We’re not sure if this is Kong, but this octopus tried to make a daring escape last year.
