Do People Really Need to Be Told to Not Swim in a Crocodile Trap? Apparently These Four Men Do!

We’re not sure why it’s not obvious swimming in a crocodile trap is a really bad idea. On one hand, it’s a crocodile trap filled with bait (more if you swim inside it) and that means there are almost definitely some crocodiles nearby. On the other hand, well there is no other hand — it’s a crocodile trap so don’t be stupid.

Four men recently proved they don’t possess the common sense we’ve been talking about when they photographed themselves swimming in a crocodile trap off Port Douglas Marina in Queensland, Australia. They didn’t stop there either. While they didn’t get attacked by a crocodile, they did post the pictures they took on social media.

It turns out swimming in a crocodile trap is also, to no one’s surprise, very illegal.

In fact, interfering with a crocodile trap can carry up to a $12,000 fine for perpetrators.

“I was absolutely gobsmacked, this is incredibly stupid and dangerous behavior. I’m wondering if these fellows are vying for the idiots of the year award or the idiots of the century award,” Douglas Shire Mayor Julia Leu.

We’d say they’re pretty close to the top spot for being named idiots of the century at this point.

“It is extremely dangerous to interfere with a crocodile trap, regardless of whether or not there is a crocodile within,” said a spokesperson.

These four men are incredibly lucky they weren’t attacked and managed to swim away without getting killed. Afterall, crocs aren’t exactly known for being cuddle monsters.
