Massive 27lb Lobster Named “Rocky” Released Back Into Ocean

There may be a new threat to peoples limbs lurking in Maine, after a lobster nicknamed “Rocky,” that had claws able to break an arm, was released back into the Atlantic Ocean.

“All the weight is in the claws,” Elaine Jones, education director for the state’s Department of Marine Resources, said. “It would break your arm.”

At 27-pounds, it’s the biggest lobster to ever be caught in Maine. The 40-inch-long crustacean couldn’t be kept due to a state policy requiring any lobster bigger than 5 inches from eye to the start of the tail be released.

Once lobsters get this big, it’s difficult to determine exactly how old they are. Even though “Rocky” is absolutely massive, he’s nothing compared to the world record lobster, weighing 44-pounds and caught in Nova Scotia in 1977.
