Storm Washes 17,000-Ton Oil Rig Ashore

Apparently boats aren’t the only thing that run aground.

The Transocean Winner, a 17,000-ton oil rig, ran aground after detaching from a tugboat when rough weather hit as it was towed. After detaching from the boat around 4:20am BST, the rig ended up on Dalmore Beach. Efforts were made to reconnect the tow line, but they weren’t able to make it happen.

No one was on board, but the rig was holding 280 metric tons of diesel.

“The Maritime & Coastguard Agency’s counter pollution branch and the SOSREP have both been monitoring the situation since yesterday evening and the local authority, police and Marine Scotland have all been kept informed,” said Maritime and Coastguard Agencies anti-pollution branch.
